Building a learning organisation
In early 2006, Sewalanka conducted a strategic self-assessment of the organisation's strengths and weaknesses that was facilitated by consultants from MDF South Asia.
One of the major outcomes of this process was the decision to form a new unit dedicated to monitoring and evaluation. Project-oriented monitoring and evaluation tends to be quantitative and focused on monitoring the delivery of project outputs. Sewalanka staff members felt there needed to be an organisational-level system for monitoring the impact and quality of Sewalanka programs.
The Research and Learning Unit was formed in 2006 to promote experiential learning, monitor community-based organisation (CBO) development, and improve the quality and impact of Sewalanka programs.
The Unit will liaise with universities and development research institutions to share Sewalanka experiences and remain up-to-date on social, economic, and environmental research in Sri Lanka.
The Research and Learning Unit consists of a team of researchers and an advisory committee of Sewalanka senior directors, district directors and field directors.
The Unit is currently engaged in the following activities:
• Developing uniform indicators and a national-level database to monitor CBO development
• Preparing training modules for CBO strengthening
• Coordinating training on participatory monitoring and evaluation for field staff
• Facilitating 'learning workshops' to share experiences and improve social mobilisation
• Monitoring and documenting Sewalanka program impact
• Developing an up-to-date sustainable development resource library
• Networking with universities and development research institutions to share best practices.
